Chapter 17
Why Me?
I was going up and down the aisles in Walgreen’s drug store on the corner of Denbigh Boulevard and Jefferson Avenue, just browsing. My little green, hand-held basket was filled with toothpaste, Spiderman Band-Aids, tampons and a few chocolate candy bars. It was well after 11:00 pm, and I could have waited to come to the store in the morning, but Mason was with his father and I needed to get out of the house. I stopped to read some birthday cards, fake laughing at the silly saying on the inside. Who wrote this crap?
Truth was I was stalling time. I had an empty plastic orange prescription bottle in my purse, and I wanted more, even though the label read no more refills. My cast was gone, and my bruises were barely visible though I still needed my medicine. A buddy of mine who worked in the pharmacy department was clocking on in a few minutes, and I knew he would slide me some of the glorious pills.
The store was virtually empty, so I rested with ease waiting for him to arrive. I threw a couple of other things in my basket to fill the time. A tall, handsome, black man in a white button down smock walked past me, it was him. A few moments later, the guy who was there before him left. Why was there only one worker in the whole store tonight? I thought to myself. I shrugged it off; I guess the night shift wasn’t busy, obviously. I walked over to the high counter and flashed Marcus Walker my smile. He had a sweet tooth for me for quite a while, and he leaned over the counter almost touching noses with me.
“What’s up, Toni,” he flirted.
I sweetly blushed. I reached into my bag, grabbing the bottle and placing it in his hand.
“I need a refill, I told him.”
He picked the container up, immediately looking for the label. I cut my eyes to the floor, and when I looked up they were met with his. We just stared at each other, trying to read what the other was thinking. Was he gonna call me out or play it cool? My breaths became faster and shallower as I tried to anticipate what would happen next. To my surprise, he disappeared to the back. I grinned like a high-schooler who had escaped being caught skipping class. He returned shaking the bottle in his hand, the white pills being tossed around wildly. I reached for my wallet, and he raised his palm to me.
“No charge, because this is the last time you bring this to me, right?” He glared at me, passing judgment on me.
It made me feel uncomfortable and guilty rolled in one, and it dawned on me that I wanted to get the hell out of there fast. I heard the bell ring behind me as a customer walked in. I sorta giggled.
“Of course, of course, this is the last time,” I assured him.
I put the bottle back in my purse as the hairs on the back of my neck started to tickle.
